TURKISH USHAK (OUSHAK) RUGS
The silky, luminous wool rugs from the Ushak (Oushak) region of Turkey
are some of the very finest Oriental Rugs available.
Historically, many of the true masterpieces of the 15th and 16th centuries
have been attributed to the Oushak region.
When the rejuvenation of Oriental rug production came in the late 19th century,
Oushak re-surfaced as a preeminent center of the weaving industry.
Their signature technique was the use of larger knots on an all-wool foundation.
Their tribal style, when fused with the older Ushak/Smyra designs,
created a hybrid that came to be known as 'Late 19th/Early 20th Oushak Carpets'.
We have traveled extensively through Turkey looking for weavers that are true to the original rugs.
This is one example from a quality weaver's extensive library of Antique Oushak designs;
a lustrous blend of angora and wool, woven on a sturdy wool foundation.
